Learning Objectives: 

• Describe the clinical role of GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists in obesity management
• Explain the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, including beneficiary eligibility requirements, covered medications, pharmacist workflow considerations, and opportunities to improve patient access to obesity treatment
• Develop a pharmacist-led implementation strategy to support GLP-1 prescribing, monitoring, patient education, and longitudinal obesity management services across ambulatory care and community pharmacy settings

Description: 

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program represents a landmark opportunity to expand access to evidence-based obesity treatment for eligible Medicare beneficiaries while creating new avenues for pharmacist-provided patient care services. This session will provide pharmacists with an overview of the evolving GLP-1 therapeutic landscape, including current indications, patient selection, clinical monitoring, and strategies to support safe and effective medication use. Participants will explore the structure and eligibility requirements of the CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, including workflows for patient identification, enrollment support, prior authorization processes, and ongoing monitoring. The session will also highlight how North Carolina pharmacists can leverage Collaborative Practice Agreements (CPAs) to expand obesity management services, improve access to care, and create sustainable clinical service models. Practical implementation strategies, workflow considerations, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration will be discussed to help pharmacy teams prepare for this emerging area of practice.
