Trish Mashburn, PharmD, is a practicing pharmacist who graduated from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Asheville in 2015. She recently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship with Dr. Delesha Carpenter at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. During her fellowship, she helped develop a rural community pharmacy practice-based research network (PBRN) and studied rural community pharmacy practice, vaccine hesitancy, research-informed pharmacist education, and pharmacy-based harm reduction. She helped develop two training programs for pharmacists, including one to improve naloxone communication and another to share strategies to overcome buprenorphine dispensing barriers. She has seven years of experience working in independent community pharmacies across Western North Carolina and actively serves buprenorphine patients in and around Asheville, NC.


  • Explain what buprenorphine is and describe its use as a treatment option for patients with opioid use disorder
  • Identify barriers that can limit access to buprenorphine at community pharmacies and explain how to overcome these barriers
  • Recognize how to create a welcoming environment for patients with buprenorphine prescriptions for opioid use disorder
  • Identify resources that can be used to increase buprenorphine access at community pharmacies
